Be buried to the neck in geothermally heated black sand on the shores of Kagoshima Bay — Ibusuki's legendary sunamushi experience. One of Japan's most singular wellness rituals, performed in a spectacular coastal setting framed by open ocean.
What to expect
Robed in a yukata, you recline on the volcanic black-sand beach while attendants bury you from chin to toe in sand heated naturally by underground hot springs to around 50°C. Ten to fifteen minutes of this ancient Japanese therapy — said to deliver the benefits of three weeks of conventional bathing — leaves skin luminous and muscles utterly dissolved. The facility is set right on Kinko Bay with wide Pacific views. Follow with a private kaiseki lunch at a local ryokan for the full Kagoshima luxury arc.
Good to know
Ibusuki is 1 hour south of Kagoshima by private car. Pre-arrange private transport from the cruise terminal (book via Michi Travel or Shore Excursions Asia). Saraku opens daily 9:30–17:00. Remove all jewellery before the sand bath. Allow 4–5 hours return including lunch. Not recommended for those with claustrophobia or heart conditions.
