Step inside a living Vanikoro Melanesian community for a rare, deeply personal cultural exchange — traditional welcome ceremonies, kastom storytelling from village elders, and hands-on participation in daily life that no rushed group visit can replicate.
What to expect
Your English-speaking local guide — deeply connected to the community — leads you through the village to a formal welcome ceremony with traditional music and kava-sharing. Village elders recount oral histories of Vanikoro, including their own ancestral knowledge of the La Pérouse shipwreck. Guests are invited to join women weaving pandanus, observe canoe-carving, and share a light traditional meal. The visit closes with a quiet walk through village gardens explaining medicinal plants and subsistence agriculture.
Good to know
Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered; remove shoes when entering homes. Bring small, meaningful gifts (school supplies, fishing hooks) rather than cash for children. Allow 3–4 hours. Confirm your visit with the guide at least 48 hours ahead so the community can prepare the welcome.
