Glide deep into the Sepik River's labyrinthine waterways by traditional dugout canoe, meeting the legendary crocodile clans whose spirit houses and scarification rituals remain unchanged for millennia. This is the most culturally immersive experience in all of Melanesia.
What to expect
Board a hand-carved dugout canoe at dawn as river mist lifts off the water. Your local guide navigates through reed-fringed tributaries to a Iatmul village, where you are welcomed into the haus tambaran (spirit house) — entry normally forbidden to outsiders. Witness intricate wood carvings, hear the mythology of the crocodile ancestor, and watch master carvers at work. A freshly prepared riverside lunch is served before your return.
Good to know
The Sepik is best accessed via a short domestic flight to Wewak or Ambunti from Port Moresby; confirm your ship's port of call and all-aboard time before booking. Pre-book at least 6 weeks in advance. Bring strong insect repellent and light long sleeves.
