Paddle a private sea kayak through the mangrove-fringed bays of Mansuar Island's interior coastline, listening to hornbills overhead, then hike a short jungle trail to a hidden freshwater waterfall for a cool plunge in total seclusion.
What to expect
Launching from the homestay jetty in stable sea kayaks, you glide through shallow mangrove channels where kingfishers flash electric blue above the roots. Your naturalist guide narrates the mangrove ecosystem and points out juvenile reef fish sheltering in the root systems. After approximately 90 minutes of paddling you beach the kayaks and follow a well-cut trail 20 minutes into the jungle to reach a tiered freshwater cascade. A packed lunch of freshly grilled fish and rice is enjoyed in the shade before the return paddle, timed to catch the afternoon light on the limestone formations.
Good to know
Best suited to moderate fitness levels; no technical kayaking skill required. Depart by 08:00 to complete the half-day with comfortable time before all-aboard. Bring insect repellent for the jungle section, water shoes, and a dry bag for electronics. This experience does not require the Marine Park Permit as it is predominantly a land and mangrove excursion.
