Glide by silent electric motorboat deep into the largest mangrove forest in Asia — home to saltwater crocodiles, New Guinea's iconic birds-of-paradise, and communities of proboscis-like babirusa deer found nowhere else on Earth.
What to expect
The boat slips almost soundlessly into the mangrove labyrinth as dawn mist lifts from the water. Your expert naturalist guide spots species that most visitors never see — the Papuan hornbill navigating the canopy, mudskippers performing territorial displays, and the occasional massive saltwater crocodile banking on an exposed root. At a concealed bird hide deep in the forest, you spend a magical 30 minutes watching a King Bird-of-Paradise display. Fresh coffee and local pastries are served on the water as you drift back.
Good to know
Depart at first light (approximately 05:30–06:00) for optimal wildlife activity; return by 11:30, well before all-aboard. A long-sleeved shirt and insect repellent are essential. The operator supplies high-quality binoculars and field guides. Book at least 3 weeks ahead as the electric boat has extremely limited capacity.
