Traditional Crafts Masterclass: Bilum Weaving & Canoe Carving

Sit alongside Garove master craftspeople for a hands-on session in two of Melanesia's most storied skills — bilum string-bag weaving and outrigger canoe carving — preserving knowledge passed down through unbroken oral tradition.

What to expect

Gather in a shaded village workshop where a bilum-weaving master demonstrates the knotting technique unique to the Witu Islands — guests then attempt their own small panel to take home as a keepsake. A canoe carver shows traditional adze work on a dugout in progress, explaining the symbolic motifs carved into the bow. Your cultural interpreter facilitates conversation and translation throughout. No more than eight guests ensures personal attention from each master.
