Slip into the crystalline waters of Kwatisore Bay and float beside the world's largest fish in their natural habitat. This is Cenderawasih Bay at its most primal — an intimate, utterly bucket-list encounter in Indonesia's greatest marine park.
What to expect
You approach the whale sharks by tender and slip into the water alongside fish up to 12 metres long, drawn to the surface by local fishermen's bagan nets in a remarkable, centuries-old symbiosis. Guides keep you at respectful distances, explaining the sharks' behaviour and ecology as you snorkel in gin-clear, warm tropical water. The sheer scale and docility of these animals — making deliberate eye contact as they glide past — makes this one of the most moving wildlife encounters on the planet. A dedicated marine biologist on board provides full pre-briefing and in-water support throughout.
Good to know
Whale sharks are present year-round at Kwatisore; best visibility August–October. Pre-book well in advance — private group departures fill fast. Confirm your all-aboard time with ship staff and allow 30–45 min transfer to the bagan site by zodiac or local boat.
