Step inside the most formidable medieval fortress in the eastern Mediterranean — the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes — then lose yourself in the UNESCO-listed walled city surrounding it.
What to expect
The Palace of the Grand Master is a 14th-century Hospitaller masterpiece — its towers, moat and colonnaded courtyards commanding the entire medieval city. Inside, ancient Hellenistic mosaics (relocated from Kos by the Italians) adorn the floors of state rooms that once hosted Crusader Grand Masters. Beyond the palace, the Street of the Knights — one of the best-preserved medieval thoroughfares in Europe — leads to the Archaeological Museum housed in a 15th-century hospital. The Old Town's 4 km of intact walls can also be walked at sunset for extraordinary views.
Good to know
The palace is a short, easy 15-min walk from the Rhodes cruise port — no transport needed. Arrive at opening (08:30) to beat crowds. The site closes at 15:30 and is shut on Tuesdays; check your port day before booking. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes recommended for cobblestones.
