Step ashore at Kwatisore village for a rare, respectful encounter with the indigenous Mairasi people — their forest knowledge, traditional fishing techniques, and vibrant oral storytelling traditions almost entirely unaltered by mass tourism.
What to expect
Arriving by zodiac, you are greeted by village elders and led through a settlement where dugout canoes rest outside stilted homes above the waterline. Guides translate as fishermen demonstrate the bagan net techniques that attract whale sharks, and village women share the weaving patterns that encode family lineage. A communal lunch of fresh barramundi, sago and tropical fruit is prepared in your honour. The visit closes with a short forest walk to a freshwater spring considered sacred by the community.
Good to know
Dress respectfully — shoulders and knees covered; lightweight cotton works well in the humidity. Bring small gifts such as school stationery — guides advise on culturally appropriate items. Limited group size of 10 guests maximum ensures the village is not overwhelmed.
