Begin at the Siwalima Museum — the finest repository of Malukan cultural artefacts — then escape to Pantai Liang, consistently ranked among Indonesia's most beautiful beaches, for an afternoon of blissful swimming and sunbathing.
What to expect
The Siwalima Museum perches on a hilltop above Ambon Bay, its galleries covering everything from Banda spice-trade history to traditional Malukan proa sailing craft and WWII artefacts. Your guide contextualises the collection so each object comes alive rather than sitting behind glass. The drive north to Liang Beach takes roughly 40 minutes through coconut groves and coastal villages. The beach itself is a sweep of chalk-white sand and shallow turquoise water — bring a good book and surrender the afternoon to it. Cold drinks and sarongs are arranged in advance.
Good to know
Museum closes early on Sundays — visit first thing; aim to arrive at 09:00. Liang Beach has limited shade; pack a hat and reef-safe sunscreen. The return drive to the pier takes about 50 minutes, so depart Liang no later than 2 hours before all-aboard.
