Whale Shark Encounter at Kwatisore Bagan — Up Close

Slip into the warm, gin-clear waters of Kwatisore Bay and snorkel or free-dive alongside the world's largest fish — guaranteed encounters at the iconic floating bagans. This is the single most celebrated wildlife moment in all of West Papua.

What to expect

Local fishermen attract whale sharks to their bagans with small fish, so encounters are remarkably reliable and close — often within arm's reach in just 3–8 metres of crystal visibility. A qualified marine guide briefs you on respectful interaction before entry, keeping numbers low so each guest enjoys undisturbed time in the water. The surrounding reef teems with turtles, reef sharks, and technicolour coral — making even the surface interval extraordinary. Expect to spend 2–3 hours in or on the water at Kwatisore.

Good to know

Operates from Kwatisore village jetty; a short tender or speedboat ride from anchorage. Mornings are best — whale sharks are most active and visibility peaks before noon. Pre-book well in advance; spaces are strictly capped. Bring your own mask/snorkel if you prefer a perfect fit, and a rash guard for sun protection. Confirm all-aboard time with ship's officer before departing.
