Glide silently through Cenderawasih Bay's prehistoric limestone karst formations by sea kayak or SUP — threading hidden sea caves, emerald lagoons, and deserted white-sand beaches reachable by no other means.
What to expect
Departure is at first light, when the limestone towers glow amber and kingfishers skim the water's surface. The guide leads the group along a route threading narrow channels between karst pillars, pausing to float inside a cathedral-like sea cave whose roof drips with stalactites above crystal-clear water. Mid-paddle, a secluded beach offers a freshwater rinse and local snack of pandan-wrapped sticky rice before the return. Snorkelling gear can be attached to kayak bows for spontaneous reef stops — turtles frequently surface alongside paddlers on this route.
Good to know
No kayaking experience required — stable sit-on-top kayaks used; single and tandem options available. SUP boards available for confident paddlers. Departs at sunrise (approx. 06:00) to beat wind chop and maximise golden-hour light. Sunscreen, dry bags, and reef-safe sun hats are essential. Duration: approximately 3 hours paddling.
