Trek into the ancient rainforest fringing Cenderawasih Bay at first light with an ornithologist guide for the most theatrical wildlife display on Earth — male Birds-of-Paradise in full courtship plumage, performing their extraordinary dawn display.
What to expect
Pre-dawn boat transfer to the forest edge is followed by a quiet 20-minute walk to a purpose-built hide overlooking a known lek clearing. As dawn breaks, male Cenderawasih Birds-of-Paradise descend — feathers fanned, iridescent plumes trembling — in competitive display around the watching guests. The ornithologist whispers identifications and behaviour notes throughout, and the post-display forest walk adds hornbills, parrots, kingfishers, and giant imperial pigeons to the list. A field journal and species checklist is provided to each guest as a keepsake.
Good to know
Strict silence protocol in and around the hide — perfume and insect repellent should be applied before departure, not near the lek. Wear muted earth tones; no white or bright colours. Departs approximately 04:30–05:00 to be in position before first light. Rubber-soled trekking shoes and long trousers recommended; leech socks advisable after rain. Binoculars available to borrow; bring your own if preferred.
