Ascend to the 18th-century Evangelistria Monastery — where the first Greek national flag was raised in 1807 — then wind through Skiathos Old Town's Plakes quarter with a local historian, uncovering whitewashed alleys and Aegean-Byzantine stories few visitors ever hear.
What to expect
The monastery sits in dense pine woodland above the town, cool and aromatic even in August. Inside, frescoes glow in candlelight and a monk may offer you a shot of tsipouro and a spoon sweet — genuine Aegean hospitality. Back in town, the Plakes neighbourhood reveals neoclassical mansions, the birthplace of novelist Alexandros Papadiamantis, and a working harbour that looks exactly as it did in 1900. The walk ends at a shaded kafeneion for a Greek coffee and almond cake.
Good to know
Combined tour runs 09:00–13:00; the monastery is a 20-minute taxi ride from the port. Dress respectfully — shoulders and knees covered for the monastery (wraps usually provided). No booking required for Old Town walks, but private monastery transport must be reserved in advance.
