Stand mere metres from post-Panamax mega-ships as they squeeze through the newest and most spectacular expansion locks on the Canal. Agua Clara, on the Atlantic side, is the closest lock complex to Cristobal port — and the most dramatic.
What to expect
Your private English-speaking guide collects you at the pier and transfers you the short distance to the Agua Clara Visitor Centre, opened as part of the 2016 Canal Expansion. From the elevated observation platform you'll watch colossal Neo-Panamax container ships — some carrying over 14,000 containers — glide through with mere centimetres to spare, guided by a flotilla of tugboats. The guide contextualises every movement with the Canal's history, from the French failure of the 1880s to the US handover in 1999. Finish with a walk through the interactive museum before returning to port in comfort.
Good to know
Agua Clara is only 15 minutes from the cruise pier — ideal even with a shorter port call. Entry to the visitor centre is approx. USD 10–17 per person (non-resident). Book the private tour via AdventureSmith well in advance for guaranteed departure times aligned to your all-aboard.
