Journey by dugout canoe up a jungle river to an authentic Emberá village, where you'll be welcomed by a community who have inhabited the Darién and Canal Zone forests for centuries. An intimate, respectful, and genuinely moving cultural encounter.
What to expect
Transfer to the river embarkation point, then glide upstream by traditional dugout through pristine rainforest to the Emberá Drua village on the banks of Lake Gatun. Community elders greet you with traditional music; women demonstrate the intricate craft of woven basket-making and the ancient art of temporary tagua-nut tattooing. A lunch of fresh river fish and patacones is served overlooking the jungle. The experience is community-run, with proceeds going directly to the village — making this as ethical as it is extraordinary.
Good to know
The journey is roughly 60–75 minutes each way from Cristobal. Wear sandals or water shoes for the canoe transfer, and bring a light rain jacket. Respectful dress (covering shoulders and knees) is appreciated. Book the private option well in advance for a dedicated departure time.
