Hike a guided jungle trail through Hiva Oa's mist-soaked interior to a hidden cascade, listening for the haunting song of the Marquesan kingfisher — one of the rarest birds on Earth — in forest found nowhere else.
What to expect
The trail departs from the outskirts of Atuona and climbs through a cathedral of mango, breadfruit and ironwood trees, the air thick with vanilla and damp earth. Your naturalist guide identifies bird calls — the electric-blue Marquesan kingfisher, the endemic Hiva Oa monarch — and points out medicinal plants used in traditional Marquesan tattooing ceremonies. A 20-metre cascade midway provides a natural swimming pool beneath a canopy of tree ferns. The descent rewards with sweeping views across Taaoa Bay to the open Pacific.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required; trail involves approx. 300m elevation gain on rooted paths. Duration 3.5–4 hours; confirm all-aboard time before booking. Wear long trousers (insects), sturdy hiking shoes, and bring 1.5L of water. The Marquesas receive heavy rainfall year-round — trails can be slippery; the guide will advise on conditions day-of.
