At 2,205 metres, the Piton Maido viewpoint delivers what many consider the single most breathtaking panorama in the entire Indian Ocean — a sheer 1,500-metre drop into the roadless Cirque de Mafate, accessible only on foot or by helicopter.
What to expect
You ascend through fragrant tamarind and cryptomeria forest as the coast glitters far below, arriving at the Maido plateau as morning mist burns away over the cirque. The view is staggering — sheer green walls, silver rivers, and tiny hamlet rooftops 1.5 km beneath you. A short signed walk along the ridge amplifies the perspective. Your guide can arrange a Creole breakfast picnic at the summit, served with local vanilla coffee and fresh tropical fruit.
Good to know
Half-day tour; depart by 07:00 for best conditions (clouds build after 10:00). The summit is cool and sometimes windy — bring a layer. Pairs beautifully with an afternoon at Saint-Gilles beach if timing allows. Confirm the road is open (occasional maintenance closures) with your guide before departure.
