Escape to one of the most pristine, undeveloped barrier island beaches on the entire US East Coast — a remote National Seashore with no roads, no hotels, and near-empty white sand shores perfect for world-class shelling, swimming, and serene solitude.
What to expect
A short ferry ride from Harkers Island or the Beaufort waterfront deposits you on a pristine barrier island with no commercial development — just sea, sand, and sky. Spend your time combing the shell-strewn surf (Cape Lookout is one of the top shelling beaches in the southeast US), swimming in calm, clear water, or simply marvelling at the isolation. The iconic Cape Lookout Lighthouse provides a dramatic focal point for photographs. Rangers are occasionally present to share the island's natural and maritime history.
Good to know
Ferries depart from Harkers Island (a 30-minute drive from Beaufort) and from the Beaufort waterfront seasonally; confirm schedules at 252-728-6244. Bring everything you need — water, food, sunscreen — as there are no facilities. Allow at least 3–4 hours on the island. Book the first ferry of the day for the longest possible beach time.
