Explore the best-preserved Danish colonial town in the Americas — ochre-walled arcaded merchant houses, cobblestone wharves, and the moat-ringed Fort Christiansvaern — on a private walk with a St. Croix cultural historian. A living-history tableau unlike anywhere else in the US.
What to expect
Begin at the yellow-brick Scale House on the Christiansted waterfront, once the hub of the island's sugar and rum trade, and wind through the arcade of Company Street with its unchanged 1750s shopfronts. Inside Fort Christiansvaern, your guide walks the ramparts overlooking the harbor and explains the fort's role in both colonial control and the 1848 freedom march. The tour concludes at the Old Danish Customs House with time to browse the NPS exhibits.
Good to know
The historic district is a 5-minute walk from the Christiansted waterfront dock. Morning departures are coolest and least crowded. Book a licensed local guide through the USVI Department of Tourism or the NPS site's ranger program — confirm at least one week ahead. The entire walk is flat and suits all fitness levels.
