Stand inside a 520-million-year-old meteorite impact crater — one of Scandinavia's most extraordinary geological wonders, hidden in plain sight just outside Vaasa. Söderfjärden is a living farmland crater bowl with a dramatic story written in ancient rock.
What to expect
A short scenic drive from the port brings you to the Söderfjärden plain, a perfectly circular depression 5.5 km wide — the eroded remains of a meteorite impact. Ascend the observation tower for the reveal: the crater rim visible as a subtle ridge encircling the flat farmland below. Your guide narrates the science and local folklore, then walks you through the crater floor among wildflower meadows. In spring and autumn, vast flocks of migratory cranes — sometimes 40,000 birds — roost here in a spectacle of near-mythological scale.
