Step aboard a real Arctic icebreaker, watch it cleave through frozen sea, then don a survival suit and float among the ice floes — an utterly singular experience unique to Luleå.
What to expect
After boarding a working icebreaker you feel the raw power of the hull crushing pack ice as you push north into the frozen archipelago. The crew then suits you up in a neoprene-lined immersion suit and you lower yourself off the stern into the ice-cold water — buoyant, warm and utterly exhilarated. Hot lingonberry juice and Swedish cinnamon rolls are served on deck as you watch the sun skim the ice horizon. The entire experience lasts roughly 3–4 hours, giving you plenty of time to return well before all-aboard.
Good to know
Seasonal (roughly December–April) — confirm current ice conditions with the operator before booking. Departs from Luleå harbour, a short taxi ride from the cruise terminal. Book directly through Visit Luleå at least 2 weeks ahead as suits are allocated per size.
