Île Royale harbours one of the Caribbean's most accessible free-roaming scarlet macaw colonies alongside agoutis, coatis, and sea turtle nesting beaches — explore them with a naturalist guide in the cool of the morning.
What to expect
Your naturalist guide leads a gentle 90-minute circuit through the island's forested interior and coastal paths, pausing to identify the island's remarkable residents: free-ranging scarlet macaws that land within metres of you, agoutis scuttling through the ruins, and magnificent frigatebirds wheeling overhead. Between April and August, the guide may reveal fresh sea-turtle tracks or even a nesting leatherback. The juxtaposition of prison ruins draped in jungle and thriving wildlife is utterly extraordinary.
Good to know
Morning departures from Kourou (around 06:00) are essential for the best wildlife sightings. Pre-book the naturalist through the island administration. Bring binoculars, insect repellent, and a light rain layer.
