Learn the ancient Polynesian art of navigating by stars, ocean swells, and birds from a master wayfinder in Tonga or Samoa — cultures whose ancestors crossed the very date-line waters beneath your ship without a single instrument.
What to expect
Gathering at a traditional fale (open-sided pavilion) beside the lagoon, your master navigator opens with a ceremonial kava ritual and an oral history of Pacific migration across the date line. You then board a restored traditional double-hulled canoe and practise reading ocean swells with your hands, identifying star paths by name in Samoan, and tracking frigate birds as navigation aids. The session concludes with a guided paddle across the lagoon as the sun sets over the very waters your ancestors crossed — and yours will too on this voyage.
Good to know
Available in Samoa (Apia) or Tonga (Nuku'alofa) depending on your itinerary. Wear light, reef-safe clothing you don't mind getting slightly damp. Advance booking via Samoa Tourism Authority is strongly recommended — artisan navigators have limited availability.
