Glide across the UNESCO World Heritage St Lucia Estuary — Africa's largest estuarine system — past wallowing hippo pods and basking Nile crocodiles on a private guided boat safari. The sheer density of mega-fauna at the water's edge is unlike anywhere else on Earth.
What to expect
A 30-minute transfer from Richards Bay brings you to the charming lakeside village of St Lucia, the gateway to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Aboard a flat-bottomed game-viewing vessel, your naturalist guide narrates as hippo families surface metres away and massive crocs haul onto sun-baked banks. The estuary is also a birdwatcher's paradise — saddle-billed storks, African fish eagles and goliath herons are regulars. After the safari, explore St Lucia's boardwalk and dine on fresh seafood before the transfer back.
Good to know
Half-day option (5–6 hours total) fits comfortably within port hours. Estuary boat departs approximately every 90 minutes from 08:00. Private charter should be pre-booked at least 48 hours ahead. iSimangaliso park entry fee (~ZAR 280/USD 15 pp) is additional.
