Ascend to the Nihondaira Plateau — Japan's most celebrated green-tea landscape — for sweeping views of Fuji, the Pacific, and terraced tea fields, then glide by ropeway to the ancient Kunozan Toshogu Shrine.
What to expect
The plateau rises 307 m above Suruga Bay, and on a clear day the panorama of Mt. Fuji, the bay, and the Izu Peninsula is breathtaking. Your guide walks you through working tea fields and explains Shizuoka's status as Japan's premier tea prefecture. The Nihondaira Ropeway whisks you down to Kunozan Toshogu, one of Japan's most ornate Edo-period shrines and the original resting place of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The return ascent by ropeway gives you a second, often clearer look at Fuji over the canopy.
Good to know
Nihondaira is about 30 minutes from Shimizu Port by private car — factor ropeway queues (15–20 min) into your timing. The ropeway closes in high winds; confirm on the morning of your call. Wear comfortable shoes — the shrine complex involves steps.
