Step inside Belgium's most underrated Gothic cathedral — Saint-Paul — and discover its extraordinary Treasury, housing the personal reliquary of Charles the Bold and one of Europe's finest collections of medieval goldsmithery. An intimate, crowd-free jewel.
What to expect
The Cathedral of Saint-Paul rises serenely from a quiet close in the Old Town, its Flamboyant Gothic façade only hinting at the riches within. Inside, soaring ribbed vaulting draws the eye upward while exquisite carved choir stalls line the nave. The Treasury — housed in the former chapter house — is the revelation: reliquaries encrusted with precious stones, ivory triptychs, and the magnificent bust-reliquary of Charles the Bold in gleaming silver-gilt. An on-site audio guide (available in English) provides scholarly yet accessible commentary at your own pace. Allow a full, unhurried 90 minutes.
Good to know
Open daily; Treasury closes for lunch 12:30–14:00 — plan your visit around this. Located a short walk from the Halle aux Viandes in the Old Town. EUR 7 entry is among the best-value cultural admissions in Belgium. Combine with Montagne de Bueren nearby for a full morning. Photography of the nave is permitted; Treasury photography may be restricted.
