Conquer Liège's most iconic landmark — 374 gas-lantern-lined steps climbing steeply to the historic Citadel — for the most breathtaking panoramic view over the Meuse valley and the rooftops of a city that refuses to be ordinary.
What to expect
The Montagne de Bueren staircase is a near-vertical ribbon of 374 steps cut into the hillside in 1875 so soldiers could reach the Citadel quickly — and it remains Liège's most photographed and most loved landmark. The climb takes 15–20 minutes at a steady pace, with gas lanterns adding extraordinary atmosphere at dusk. At the summit, the former Citadel grounds open up into terraced gardens with sweeping 360-degree views over the Meuse, the old city and the industrial horizon beyond. A cold Liège beer at the hilltop café is the well-earned reward.
Good to know
Best in the early morning (golden light, few visitors) or late afternoon. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes — the steps are steep and can be wet. From the Citadel, a short walk leads to the Parc de la Citadelle with further views. The official Liège audio walking tour (downloadable via visitezliege.be) covers the staircase and surrounding neighbourhood. Free; no booking required. Factor in ~45 minutes total for the ascent, views and descent.
