Step into a living Xhosa village at Khaya La Bantu — 'Home of the People' — for a private cultural encounter unlike anything else in the Eastern Cape. Storytelling, traditional dance, craft and cuisine reveal the soul of Nelson Mandela's heritage nation.
What to expect
Arriving on a homestead of thatched mud-brick rondavels 20 km from town, you are welcomed with the Xhosa greeting ceremony before your host guides you through the story of clan identity, rites of passage and the philosophy of Ubuntu. Skilled artisans demonstrate beadwork and pottery; traditional drummers and dancers perform in the kraal. A private lunch of umngqusho (samp and beans) and braai finishes with rooibos and local honey. This is authenticity without contrivance.
Good to know
Approximately 20 minutes from the harbour. Private bookings require at least 48 hours' notice — email or call the village directly. Wear comfortable shoes; the paths are unpaved. Photography is warmly welcomed but ask your host first. Easily combined with a beach stop on the return leg.
