Glide over one of the world's most biodiverse fringing reefs aboard a traditional Vezo outrigger dhow, then snorkel kaleidoscopic coral gardens teeming with parrotfish, lionfish, and hawksbill turtles. This is Madagascar's underwater bucket-list — unhurried, private, and utterly unforgettable.
What to expect
Your Vezo fisherman-guide poles the hand-crafted outrigger silently over the lagoon until the reef wall appears beneath you in electric blue. You slip in and spend as long as you like drifting over staghorn coral heads and sea-grass meadows before the dhow returns you to a shaded stretch of white sand for grilled crayfish and cold Trois Chevaux beer. The return sail catches the afternoon trade wind, making it one of the most scenic hours in the Indian Ocean. Expect 4–5 hours on the water in total.
Good to know
Ifaty is a 35–40 minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride north of the pier — allow at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. Pre-book at least 48 hours ahead; private dhow slots are limited, especially when multiple ships are in port. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rashguard; the equatorial sun is intense.
