Float through the 'Venice of the North' on a guided open-top canal boat, drifting beneath willow-draped stone bridges with a knowledgeable local skipper narrating eight centuries of Flemish history.
What to expect
You board at one of several historic quayside landings — Rozenhoedkaai is the most photogenic — and immediately slip into a quieter, watery version of Bruges invisible from the streets above. The skipper points out the Hospital of St John's medieval watergate, the former Hanseatic trading houses and the swans that have graced these canals by royal decree since the 15th century. The 30-minute route feels far longer, each bend revealing a new postcard view.
Good to know
Boat landings open from approximately 10:00–17:00; queues peak between 11:00–14:00 so aim for an early or late slot. Private charter bookings (highly recommended for groups of 4+) can be arranged directly via the Visit Bruges concierge service. Zeebrugge to Bruges is 15–20 minutes by taxi.
