Wreck Dive: SMS Dresden WWI Warship in Cumberland Bay

Descend on the scuttled remains of the German Imperial Navy cruiser SMS Dresden, sunk in 1915 — one of the most historically charged and least-dived wrecks in the Pacific. This is a bucket-list dive for history lovers and wreck specialists alike.

What to expect

Your locally registered dive guide briefs you dockside in San Juan Bautista before a short boat transfer into the bay. Below the surface, the outline of the Dresden's hull, artillery pieces and encrusted fittings emerge from the blue — sea lions frequently join the dive. Surface intervals are spent drifting in extraordinarily clear Pacific water before a second exploratory dive. All equipment can be arranged through the operator.

Good to know

Pre-book well in advance — guide availability is limited and dive slots fill quickly. Confirm your all-aboard time carefully; the island's tender schedule can be weather-dependent. A PADI Open Water certification minimum is required; Advanced OW recommended for deeper sections.
