The Juan Fernández Archipelago is one of the world's great endemic birdwatching destinations — species here exist nowhere else on Earth. A private half-day expedition with an expert ornithologist transforms a wildlife encounter into a genuine scientific adventure.
What to expect
Your expert ornithologist leads you along quiet forest trails within the national park, pausing at known territories for each endemic species and using a spotting scope for close-up observation. The Juan Fernández firecrown hummingbird — iridescent and otherworldly — is the star of the morning, while petrels and shearwaters soar overhead against the volcanic skyline. The guide provides a beautifully printed field notes sheet for each species encountered, and the pace is entirely dictated by what the birds are doing. A debrief over local coffee back in San Juan Bautista completes the experience.
Good to know
Early morning departure (0630–0700) strongly recommended for peak bird activity. Wear neutral, muted clothing and bring sunscreen. Park entry is included in the guide fee. The expedition is accessible to all fitness levels as trails are moderate. Book 3–4 weeks in advance.
