Stand face-to-face with Jan van Eyck's 15th-century masterpieces in the museum that holds the world's finest collection of Flemish Primitive paintings — a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with the birth of oil painting.
What to expect
The Groeningemuseum's cool, hushed galleries are an extraordinary contrast to the buzz of the Markt outside. Van Eyck's 'Madonna with Canon van der Paele' commands its own wall and rewards long, close looking — the microscopic detail in the armour and brocade remains astonishing six centuries on. Hieronymus Bosch's nightmarish 'Last Judgement' triptych provides a suitably dramatic finale. The collection spans from the 1400s to the 20th century, but the Flemish Primitive rooms are the irreplaceable heart of the visit.
