Step onto the Colosseum's ancient arena floor — where gladiators once fought — and descend into the subterranean Hypogeum, the underground warren closed to general visitors. A privileged, expert-led encounter with Rome's most iconic monument.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at the priority entrance, bypassing the public queues. On the Arena Floor, the original sand surface has been partially reconstructed so you feel the true scale of combat. Descending into the Hypogeum, you trace the ramps and cages where animals and fighters waited beneath the roar of 50,000 spectators. The visit concludes with a leisurely walk across the Palatine Hill, overlooking the Roman Forum at golden hour.
Good to know
Hypogeum access must be pre-booked weeks in advance — it sells out rapidly. Rome's Civitavecchia port is 1.5 hrs from the Colosseum by private transfer (budget ~EUR 200 return). All-aboard times for large ships docking Civitavecchia are typically 10–11 PM, giving ample time if you depart the ship by 7 AM.
