Walk the streets of ancient Pompeii with a certified archaeologist, then explore the lesser-visited — and better-preserved — ruins of Herculaneum. Two UNESCO World Heritage cities frozen in time by Vesuvius in 79 AD, revealed in extraordinary depth.
What to expect
Your private driver meets you dockside at Naples (or Civitavecchia with early departure) and takes you first to Herculaneum when it opens at 9 AM, virtually crowd-free. Your archaeologist traces the exact moment of the pyroclastic surge through the streets, pointing out carbon-preserved wooden furniture and intact mosaic floors. At Pompeii you access the House of the Vettii's famous frescoes (periodically open to small groups) and the Forum Baths, walking at a scholarly pace that no group tour affords.
Good to know
Naples is the optimal home port for this excursion (Pompeii is 40 min south by private car). From Civitavecchia the drive is ~2.5 hrs each way — manageable with a 6–7 AM departure. Pre-book Herculaneum timed entry at pompeiisites.org; House of the Vettii access requires advance reservation and is capacity-limited.
