Peer into a 200,000-gallon coral reef teeming with 2,000 creatures — sea turtles, sharks, and electric-coloured reef fish — at one of the world's great urban aquariums, steps from Boston Harbor. A bucket-list marine encounter in the heart of the city.
What to expect
The centrepiece — the four-storey, 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank — wraps visitors in a living coral reef as green sea turtles glide past at eye level and rays sweep the sandy floor. The penguin colony on the main level is one of the largest in North America, while the marine mammal center hosts rescued harbor seals. Behind-the-scenes tours allow small groups to go to restricted areas with aquarium biologists, learning about conservation research up close. The IMAX theatre adds a cinematic dimension with marine-world programming.
Good to know
The Aquarium is at Central Wharf — a 5-minute walk or quick rideshare from Black Falcon Pier. Purchase timed-entry tickets online to skip the queue; behind-the-scenes programs sell out weeks in advance and must be booked separately. Allow 2.5–3 hours for a full visit. Combine with a harbor walk along the Rose Kennedy Greenway afterward.
