Hike the raw obsidian flanks of Cerro Negro — Central America's youngest and most active volcano — then rocket down its 728-metre ash slope on a hardwood board. This is the single most visceral, bucket-list hour in all of Nicaragua.
What to expect
Your driver meets you dockside in Corinto for the 90-minute transfer to the volcano. After a moderate 45-minute ascent through black lava fields, you pull on your jumpsuit and protective goggles at the rim, where the Pacific glitters below and smoke vents perfume the air with sulphur. The board descent takes under two minutes of pure adrenaline — speeds of 50–80 km/h — before a cold Victoria beer awaits at the ranger station. Return to port leaves generous time before all-aboard.
Good to know
Allow 6–7 hours total from port. Closed-toe shoes and long sleeves essential; all gear provided. Pre-book at least 48 hours ahead; groups of 4+ get priority scheduling. All-aboard is typically 5–6 pm — confirm with your ship.
