Dartmouth Castle & Coastal Fortifications: 600 Years of Harbour History

Explore one of England's earliest purpose-built artillery castles, perched at the mouth of the Dart where it has stood sentinel since 1388. Cannon embrasures, a medieval chain boom, and panoramic sea views make this a genuinely stirring piece of English history.

What to expect

Walk through the twin towers, ducking into the Tudor gun room where original iron cannon still point seaward. St Petrox Church adjoins the castle walls — one of the most atmospheric medieval churches in Devon, with Royal Navy memorials lining the nave. A clifftop coastal path connects back to town through wildflower meadows with jaw-dropping estuary views. The castle gift shop stocks excellent Devon-made provisions for the return journey.
