Step into Japan's most intact Meiji-era port precinct — a cinematic streetscape of red-brick European buildings, retro lamp posts, and sea views — where every façade tells the story of Japan's gilded age of trade.
What to expect
Your English-speaking volunteer guide leads you through the preserved heart of Mojiko Retro, beginning at the iconic Mojiko Station — Japan's oldest surviving railway station in use. You'll admire the Former Osaka Shosen building, the Former Moji Customs House, and the Former Moji Mitsui Club where Albert Einstein once stayed during his 1922 Japan visit. The guide shares remarkable anecdotes about Moji's role as the gateway for coal exports fuelling Japan's Meiji industrialisation. The walk concludes at the Blue Wing Moji bridge with sweeping views across the Kanmon Strait to Shimonoseki.
Good to know
Pre-register your guide request via the JNTO volunteer guide portal well ahead of your port call. The district is entirely walkable from the cruise pier — no transfer needed. Allow 2–3 hours. Dress for the weather as the walk is largely outdoors.
