Descend beneath the Kanmon Strait and walk the 780-metre undersea pedestrian tunnel that links Kyushu to Honshu — one of Japan's most extraordinary and little-known passages, crossing a literal tectonic and cultural boundary on foot.
What to expect
Descend by elevator from the Moji side entrance to the tunnel portal, then walk the gently curving, immaculately maintained pedestrian passage beneath the churning strait. The halfway point is marked by a painted line on the floor — one foot in Fukuoka Prefecture (Kyushu), one in Yamaguchi Prefecture (Honshu) — and the moment is genuinely thrilling in its simplicity. The tunnel exit brings you up into Mimosusogawa Park in Shimonoseki, steps from the site of the 1185 Battle of Dan-no-ura. Return on foot or combine with the Karato Market visit on the Shimonoseki side before ferrying back.
Good to know
The tunnel is open daily 06:00–22:00 and is entirely self-guided — no booking required. The walk takes approximately 15–20 minutes each way. The Moji entrance is about 1 km from the cruise pier — walkable or a short taxi. Combine with Karato Market and the Kanmon Strait cruise for an exceptional full-day trio.
