Kyushu Railway History Museum: Japan's Golden Age of Steam

Discover Japan's railway heritage at one of Kyushu's most evocative museums — housed in the original 1891 Kyushu Railway headquarters in Mojiko Retro — where nine legendary locomotives and immersive exhibits await the curious traveller.

What to expect

Step through the ornate brick gates of the original Kyushu Railway Company headquarters into a courtyard of magnificent steam and diesel locomotives — including a rare 1922 steam engine — arranged beneath open skies. Inside the restored headquarters building, meticulously curated exhibits chronicle the railways that opened Kyushu to trade and tourism from the Meiji era onward. A miniature railway circuit in the grounds adds a charming interlude. The museum sits at the heart of Mojiko Retro, making it a natural anchor for exploration of the surrounding architecture.
