Board a high-speed vessel for a thrilling expedition to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary — one of the world's premier whale-watching grounds. Humpbacks, finbacks, and minkes breach and lunge-feed just miles off Boston's shore.
What to expect
Departing from Long Wharf, the vessel accelerates across Massachusetts Bay toward the shallow, nutrient-rich Stellwagen Bank — a magnet for feeding baleen whales from April through October. The naturalist identifies individuals by their unique fluke markings and shares their life histories as humpbacks lunge-feed on sand lance just meters from the rail. On a great day, bubble-net feeding — a complex cooperative hunting technique — unfolds before you in one of nature's most spectacular displays. Dolphins and sea birds frequently join the spectacle on the return run.
Good to know
Departures are from Long Wharf, a 20-minute walk or 10-minute taxi from the Black Falcon Terminal. The excursion is 3.5–4 hours round trip — plan carefully around your all-aboard time and allow buffer. Season runs April–October (peak sightings June–September). Book online at least a week ahead in summer; sell out fast. Dress in layers — it is dramatically cooler on the open water.
