Trace the birth of modern Europe — from the first shots of WWII at Westerplatte to the Solidarity shipyard gate where communism fell — led by an expert guide in an intimate small group of no more than eight.
What to expect
The day opens at Westerplatte peninsula, where on 1 September 1939 the first battle of WWII was fought — your guide narrates the siege with rare archive photos. You'll move through the post-war shipyard district to Gate No. 2, icon of the Solidarity movement, and enter the European Solidarity Centre — a stunning museum built in the form of a rusting ship hull. An optional close-out is lunch at Bar Mleczny Neptun, a legendary 'milk bar' beloved by shipyard workers, now a cultural monument in itself.
Good to know
The European Solidarity Centre charges approx. PLN 25 (EUR 6) admission, included by most operators. Tours depart from the Green Gate in the Old Town. Book at least 10 days ahead in peak summer. Comfortable walking shoes essential.
