Nelson's Dockyard & English Harbour: Private Heritage Deep-Dive

Explore the world's only continuously working Georgian naval dockyard with a private expert guide, uncovering 300 years of Royal Navy history, Admiral Nelson's quarters, and sweeping hilltop views from Shirley Heights.

What to expect

Your private guide meets you at the beautifully restored dockyard gates and leads you through copper-roofed boat houses, the Admiral's Inn, and original 18th-century workshops still in active use. The route winds up to the ruins of Shirley Heights, where panoramic views across English and Falmouth Harbours — dotted with superyachts where frigates once moored — are breathtaking. Sundowner cocktails at the Shirley Heights Lookout Bar cap the experience perfectly. The whole excursion moves entirely at your pace, with no commentary competing across a headset.

Good to know

The dockyard is about 30–40 minutes by taxi from the St. John's cruise pier. Wear comfortable walking shoes — the ascent to Shirley Heights involves uneven cobblestones and a moderate climb. Sunday evenings feature a famous steel-pan and reggae party at the Lookout, but the site is far more serene during the day.
