Escape into the forested hills of the Wienerwald and descend into a centuries-old Heuriger (wine tavern) in Grinzing or Neustift for new-vintage Grüner Veltliner poured straight from the barrel in a vine-draped courtyard.
What to expect
A private car or taxi winds you through vine-terraced suburbs to the edge of the Vienna Woods, where the air cools and the city noise evaporates. At Mayer am Pfarrplatz, a 17th-century courtyard fills with accordion music and the scent of elderflower. Choose from estate-grown Rieslings and Gemischter Satz alongside house-cured Liptauer cheese, cold roast meats, and freshly baked bread. The experience is unhurried, convivial, and authentically Viennese. A short stroll through the vineyard before sunset is unforgettable.
Good to know
Grinzing and Neustift are 20–30 min by taxi from the city centre. Heuriger are usually open from 16:00; arrive by 17:00 for the best seats. Check the Heuriger is open (a pine branch over the door = open). Danube departures are typically evening — this works perfectly as a late-afternoon excursion.
