Unlock the world's greatest collection of Baroque and Old Masters — Vermeer, Caravaggio, Bruegel, and Cellini's legendary Saliera — inside a museum that is itself a palace, guided by a specialist art historian.
What to expect
Enter beneath the soaring octagonal cupola painted by Klimt (his only ceiling work) and ascend the marble staircase flanked by Canova and Theseus. Your specialist guide weaves between Bruegel's peasant feast scenes, Titian's sensual mythologies, and Velázquez's haunting Infantas portraits. The Cabinet of Curiosities (Kunstkammer) holds Benvenuto Cellini's gold-and-enamel Saliera — arguably the most precious small object in Europe. Finish with coffee in the celebrated KHM café set inside the cupola rotunda. Allow 2–3 hrs minimum.
Good to know
The KHM is on the Ringstraße, a 10-min walk from the Danube Canal or a direct tram ride. Book private guided tours via the museum education office at least 2 weeks ahead. Standard tickets can be bought on the door but queues grow by mid-morning in summer. Closed Mondays.
