The Grotta di Nettuno at Capo Caccia is one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular sea caves — a cathedral of stalactites and underground lakes accessible only by boat or via the legendary 654-step 'Escala del Cabirol' cliff staircase carved into the headland.
What to expect
A private transfer from Porto Torres takes you 45 minutes along the scenic coastal road to Alghero, a Catalan-flavoured medieval walled town worth a brief wander. From Alghero's port, Navisarda's boat rounds the wild Riviera del Corallo, passing flamingo-pink lagoons and dramatic cliffs to reach Capo Caccia. Inside the Grotta di Nettuno, your guide narrates the subterranean formations — stalactite columns, mirror-still underground lakes, caverns vast enough to swallow palaces — discovered by local fishermen in the 18th century. The return boat journey at golden hour is breathtaking.
Good to know
Porto Torres to Alghero is approx. 45 min by private car/taxi (EUR 45–55 one-way). Navisarda boats depart Alghero roughly hourly in peak season (Apr–Oct), first departure ~09:00. Cave entry requires a 30–40 min timed slot — book ahead online. Total excursion time from ship: 6–7 hrs; check all-aboard carefully. The alternative 654-step cliff staircase (if the sea is rough and boats suspend) is strenuous but spectacular.
