Go behind the story of one of history's most dramatic natural disasters — the catastrophic 1953 North Sea flood — with a private expert guide at the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk, just 10 km from Bruinisse. Visceral, moving, and utterly unique to Zeeland.
What to expect
The Watersnoodmuseum occupies four authentic caissons — the giant concrete blocks used to seal the breached dykes after the 1953 flood that killed 1,836 people. A private expert guide leads you through immersive multi-sensory recreations of the night the dykes burst, personal artefacts, and survivor stories gathered over decades. You descend into the caissons themselves, surrounded by the same concrete that held back the sea. The final exhibition connects the disaster to the titanic Delta Works project, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It is humbling, brilliant, and completely unrepeatable anywhere else on earth.
