Descend 58 meters beneath the Kanmon Strait and walk across the invisible line where Honshu meets Kyushu — one of the world's most extraordinary pedestrian crossings, timed perfectly for a luxury port stop.
What to expect
An elevator drops you beneath the strait's surface to a 780-metre tunnel that connects Honshu (Shimonoseki) to Kyushu (Kitakyushu) entirely on foot. At the midpoint, a painted line on the floor marks the prefectural boundary — one foot in Yamaguchi, one foot in Fukuoka — where every visitor stops for the obligatory photograph. The tunnel is cool, quiet, and strikingly well-lit, its curved white walls carrying a gentle hum of the shipping lanes above. Emerge in Kitakyushu and explore the retro Mojiko district before returning on foot or by ferry. The whole crossing takes under 20 minutes each way.
Good to know
Tunnel entrance is 15 min on foot or 8 min by taxi from the pier. Open 06:00–22:00 daily. Combine with a Mojiko Retro district stroll on the Kyushu side for a seamless half-day. Bring a light jacket — the tunnel is noticeably cooler than outside.
